‘Semilattice’ is a concept created by the urban planner, Christopher Alexander, in his work on urban theory (1965). It states that a city does not develop like a tree from a single perspective to create a birds-eye view, but changes with time, countless aggregates building up on top of each other, duplicating and transforming their roles as they develop. Using this way of thinking as a guide, I would like to look at Tokyo, introducing the concepts of ‘Creative Tokyo’ that have been put forward by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
