Dope

Roger McDonald (AIT)

I studied the cultural and social effects of various drugs for contemporary religious experiences for my Masters studies in the UK and have always had an interest and fascination with altered states of consciousness. I propose that we can think of the modern city as a kind of ‘drug’ or ‘dope’. This is not such a new idea and there is a rich history of urban studies looking into the psychological effects of the city. I introduce three such contexts to think about Tokyo as a very effective and monumental ‘doping’ machine.
