Uncovering/Walking

Keijiro Suga(Poet / Comparative Literature, Tokyo)

I tried to imagine the geography of the Tokyo area (as it came to be known) before people began to live there. There were a lot of marshes and several hills. There were also several rivers flowing through it. These marshes, which comprised one of the elements of the original coastal scenery of the Japanese archipelago, gradually disappeared as urbanization progressed. If the outer layer of the city were to be torn away, how could the coastal marshes be returned to the naked landscape? This is something I would like you to try to imagine.
