The Application of Play

Takashi Usui (Director, Artist in Jidokan)

Involved as I am in activities connected with art in Tokyo, I often feel the instinctive drive of people who want to break out of the vicious circle of consumption as a way of overcoming the stress of everyday life and come into contact with something new! The same is true of children who are fed up with the same old games or being driven to ever more consumption.
‘Play’ can be considered the third category of activity after ‘work’ and ‘consumption’. The pleasure of creating something within the margins of the city relieves the stress of life, and provides the courage to overcome obstacles. Let’s look for Tokyo’s future in the ‘play’ that rises up through the cracks in the rigidity of city life.
