The Town that Continues to Live

Koji Yoshikawa (Tokyo Art Research Lab Researcher)

Something that I learned after moving to Tokyo’s Sumida Ward is that living and working within the city’s ‘hardware’ (structure/infrastructure) makes it possible to influence this hardware infinitesimally from the inside, and this can become a technique to make the city more mature and help it survive. In my graduation work, entitled ‘The Ruins Continue to Live’, the subject of the action of ‘continuing to live’ is reversed. We thought that we were ‘living’ within the city, however, by looking upon the city as something that ‘continues to live’, we are able to view the story of the city that is Tokyo in a more objective fashion.
