Internal Radiation Exposure and the Mental Connection

Hitomi Kamanaka (Filmmaker)

From March 12, four of the nuclear reactors belonging to the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima nuclear power plant exploded in succession. It was the first emergency of this scale to have ever occurred and can truly be described as a ‘catastrophe’. The reactors were located in Fukushima Prefecture but they belonged to the Tokyo Electric Power Company. What was it that triggered the explosions? Radioactive material fell on Tokyo, which is situated 210 kilometers away, however, the majority of the population of the city appears indifferent to this fact as they continue their daily lives. This demonstrates a way of thinking that I think is unique to the inhabitants of Tokyo. Could there be a mentality that was linked to the trigger of the explosion in the same way that the power lines link Tokyo with the Fukushima power plant? It is this mental connection that I would like to consider.
