Screen, Urban Space, And Visual Culture

Toshiro Mitsuoka (Specialized in media studies)

Have you noticed how in recent years, ‘screens’ have become ubiquitous in our surrounding environment? In 1999, an advertising screen appeared on the wall of QFRONT in Shibuya, then in 2002 the digital signage of the ‘train channel’ was introduced into the carriages of Yamanote train line, screens rapidly spreading to cover the surface of the cities during this millennium. In addition, people also carry small screens with them (telephones, tablets) as they experience the city. I would like to consider this ‘ubiquity of screens’ that has arisen in contemporary Tokyo.
